Heat Running but the House Won't Warm Up? What NJ Homeowners Should Check
October 20, 20262 min read
Your heat is on and you can hear the furnace running, but the rooms stay cold. Before you call anyone, try these quick checks:
- Thermostat: make sure it's set to "Heat," the temperature is above room temperature, and the fan is on "Auto," not "On."
- Filter: a clogged filter chokes airflow. If you can't see light through it, replace it.
- Vents: open them all and move furniture or rugs that block them.
- Power: check that the breaker and the furnace switch are both on.
When to call a technician
- The air from the vents feels cool or lukewarm.
- The furnace starts, then shuts off within a few minutes.
- You hear banging or squealing, or smell burning.
- One floor stays much colder than the rest.
These can point to an ignition or flame sensor problem, a failing blower, or leaky ducts. If you ever smell gas, leave the house first, then call your gas utility.
